Moonshadow, May You Rest in Peace

Taken away by a careless driver at AINS.

Sadly, the week after I shot this this scene of Moonshadow and her foal, she was hit by a car at the Assateague Island National Seashore (AINS) and succumbed to her injuries about a week after that.

Little did I realize that when I captured this photograph on June 23, 2021 of Moonshadow (N2BHS-CKP) in the bayside campground on Assateague Island that she would die in two weeks. She was named Moonshadow because she was born during the solar eclipse on August 21, 2017. She was discovered, unresponsive, by a park ranger on July 6, 2021, apparently having died of her injuries.

Prints, framed prints, canvas prints and more are available in the Assateague Island Collection by Bill Swartwout Photography at USPictures.com.
